September Displays

We, here at the Oberlin Public Library, are very lucky to have the opportunity to display art work by local artist Bernadett Ginestet-Levine.  The pictures I took DO NOT do justice to the beauty of this artwork.  Come in to see this beautiful artwork for yourself!

Kelly create a fun display to celebrate Dahl Day!  So many great Roland Dahl books available.  What is your favorite?

Kelly's Displays

Kelly, our head of circ, is in charge of the free standing displays here at the library.  She really goes out of her way to make them something special.  A few weeks ago she created this display to highlight the fact that OPL would be at the Lorain County Fair.

There were books about cows, pigs, horses, farms, and so much more!!  Just when I thought her displays couldn't get any more amazing, I came in to work and found this masterpiece:

She's set the standard for her displays impossibly high.  I don't know how Kelly's going to top herself with the next display, but I'm excited to find out!!

August 2014 Displays

The first display case, for August, held a marvelous piece of art called (Un)natural Order by local artist Karen Lyle Reynolds.

Ms. Reynolds left an Art Companion Guide to go along with her picture.

For the small display, we're celebrating August as National Picnic Month!  It was too long to get the display in one picture so here's the top of the display

And the bottom of the long display

For our Owen Room display, we are celebrating National Vesuvius Day (August 24):

Please note the four foot Volcano in the background that I printed out, colored and taped together.  It is my masterpiece!

Old vs. New Displays

I was tasked with keeping the displays up to date at the Oberlin Public Library.  This blog will be my journey as a library display updater!

A couple of things to get out of the way:

Because Oberlin is a small public library, we try to only use non-fiction books in our display.  We don't have enough copies of fiction books to sacrifice some to a display.

There are 3 display cases that need updating.  One display I kept basically the same, so we'll skip that one for this first blog

Now, onto the displays themselves!  The display back by the Owen room looked like this originally:

I took all of the summer reading stuff from this display and added it to the display I wasn't really updating.  So one display is focused on summer reading, while the other displays are focused on summer books.

The above display I changed to "Books are Fun in the Sun!" theme

The large display over by the computers looked like this originally:

I updated it to the "Swimmingly good summer reads" theme:

While actually putting the displays together I severly underestimated the amount of work required.  Since this was my first try at displays it was pretty simple.  Next month I'll try for a more complicated "back to school" theme.  Any suggestions, comments, idea's are always welcome.
